GE Ultra Pro Signal Finder HD Amplified Antenna review: Cool LEDs, crappy performance

The GE Signal Finder HD Amplified Antenna is an indoor TV antenna with a built-in signal meter that will help you find the best place to install it. You’ll need it. In TechHive’s tests the antenna exhibited mediocre reception and didn’t displace the Winegard FlatWave Amped as our favorite indoor antenna. The antenna is about the same length and width as a magazine and looks good with a smart black plastic front. A couple of rows of LEDs in the lower right-hand corner are the antenna’s main selling point. The top row of three LEDs indicates the general signal strength and help you find the best location in your room. A second row of five LEDs indicates the “orientation” of the antenna. This is never really explained in the user manual, but it appears to be akin to a fine-tuning indicator. There’s also a switch to turn off the LEDs. The top row of LEDs indicates general signal strength, while the bottom row indicates “orientation,” a factor that the manual never explains. The meter provides a very general indication of signal level across the entire UHF band and cannot be targeted to any particular channel. If you live in an area with strong or very strong signals—and that is whe...

China Focus: China pilots unmanned farming in major grain bases

HARBIN, May 13 (Xinhua) — Agricultural drones are flying above while driverless machines transplant rows of rice seedlings in a farm in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, a major rice production base. The work is carried out on an almost 11-hectare field in Hongwei Farm, Heilongjiang, one of China’s 10 selected grain plantation areas to test agricultural automation for the next-generation of farming. Wang Fenglong, a supervisor in the Hongwei Farm, said only one person was needed for the farming. The drones are navigated by China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. He said the test would be done in both plain and hilly land, for growing a variety of crops ranging from rice, wheat and vegetables to cotton, fruit and tobacco. Sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the 10 designated farms in Jiangsu Province, Chongqing Municipality, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as well as Henan and Hainan provinces started the test this year. Liu Xiaowei, an official with the Farming Mechanization Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said the ministries had group...

Virginia Chadwyck-Healey on why buying a size up could make your outfit look more expensive The Telegraph Search Icon Save Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon Facebook icon Twitter icon Instagram icon LinkedIn icon

The great conundrum: when does a dress fit and when does it veer into oversized and shapeless (whilst undoubtedly comfortable and curry-night friendly)? Here is a prime example of how a dress can totally morph into a very different ‘look’ simply through a larger size.  This is the superbly named ‘Goldfinch’ midi dress by British brand Goat. Notice how in one small step the whole style shifts from day wear (pink) to smarter evening wear (blue). The camellia print fabric is the same, albeit in different colours, and both sizes do technically ‘fit’.   Next, see how shoes change the dress’s perception. As a rule, heels and height make you stand with more poise whilst trainers/ plimsolls or ankle… We urge you to turn off your ad blocker for The Telegraph website so that you can continue to access our quality content in the future. Choosing the Optical Measurement Device That’s Right for You | 2019-10-01

This CNC vision measuring system utilizes a stroboscopic illumination system and post image processing technology for continuous vision measurements during stage movement. This eliminates the need to accelerate, decelerate and hold stage motionless while a measurement is made, dramatically improving throughput. Optical measurement refers to noncontact measurement using various light sources. It usually requires at least one lens, a light source and a detector. It differs from other forms of inspection in that instead of using a tactile measurement method like a touch probe, it uses either a point of reference (e.g. a crosshair) or a computer to calculate edge detection. Two of its greatest benefits are its capability to measure features too small or fragile to measure by touch, and the fact that it is faster in comparison to other forms of measurement. The medical, plastics, aerospace and automotive industries are where optical measurement has, and will continue to have, significant impact. But, in reality, this form of noncontact detection applies to applications across most verticals and sectors. Adopters of modern optical measurement devices are looking for easy-to-use techno...

LED driver architectures meet demanding application requirements (MAGAZINE)

Advanced applications such as lighting for health and trends such as connected lighting result in even greater reliance on a robust driver architecture, reports MAURY WRIGHT. The LED driver is now typically the most expensive element in a solid-state lighting (SSL) product. Five or six years back, the LEDs often represented more than 50% of the bill of materials of a general illumination fixture, but now the driver is far more costly than the packaged LEDs in most luminaires. Meanwhile, the driver design must enable flicker-free output and long life at a minimum. Most products also support dimming of some type, often with the expectation of smooth dimming to extremely low levels. Indeed, driver developers face these challenges before even getting to specialty applications. For instance, drivers for outdoor, horticultural, or hazardous applications may need enhanced environmental protection. Increasingly popular tunable-white products for applications such as human-centric lighting need multiple channels. And of course connected lighting is coming to all applications and impacting the driver. Read on for a look at some of the latest innovations in driver design. Let’s start off w...
